Preventive Care

Patients who have difficulty getting out of their home need dental care as much as people who are able to travel to the dental office. Maintaining good oral hygiene is a key element in improving overall health and quality of life. Many of our patients have lost the dexterity to brush their own teeth and are dependent upon others to perform this and other routine dental tasks. The reality is that these people often have decayed, broken teeth and gum disease. Sandy brushing.JPG

At Visiting Dental Associates, PC. our preventive (recare) program is always a joint cooperative effort between our patients, their caregivers, and their medical team. Preventing dental disease starts with good oral hygiene and a balanced diet. Our dentists strive to promote, restore, and maintain the health of the oral cavity. Proper Dental Hygiene not only decreases the risk for various health diseases, it increases self-esteem, dignity, and quality of life.

Our goal is to prevent some of the perio-systemic affects that periodontal disease has (also called the oral-body connection). These include pneumonia, heart disease, heart attack, stroke, diabetes, and possibly Alzheimer’s or dementia.

At the initial visit, and each subsequent recall appointment, our dentists will routinely check for:

  • Visual dental decay
  • Oral cancer/suspicious lesions
  • Gingivitis
  • Periodontitis
  • Dental infection
  • Ill-fitting dentures/partials.
Dental Cleanings will vary according to each individual’s need and tolerance level. Dentures and partials will be cleaned and, for the edentulous, soft tissue can be inspected

After the examination, any pertinent findings are related to the power of attorney (POA) and/or facility so that decisions can be made about care.
